    About Hay & Forage Equipment

The hay and forage equipment category contains several subcategories, including bale accumulators/movers, disc mowers, mower conditioners/windrowers, rakes/tedders, rotary mowers, round balers, square balers, stalk choppers/flail mowers, tub grinders/bale processors, and other hay and forage equipment (sickle bars, wrappers, forage blowers, baggers, etc.).

Aside from equipment suitable for both small and large hay operations, the hay and forage equipment category features equipment often used in non-farm applications. Available for use with compact, medium-duty, and heavy-duty tractors, rear-, front-, and side-mounted stalk choppers/flail mowers, for example, are regularly used in industrial, municipal, property development, and other sectors to control vegetation on ranches, parks, golf courses, orchards, and estates. Despite their differences, these machines all share the ability to reduce the otherwise labor-intensive tasks of cutting, gathering, conditioning, baling, and moving hay and forage crops.

    Origins & Innovations

Farmers have been using rakes/tedders since the 1800s to speed up the process of drying down hay and other crops to produce better yields and a final product with higher nutritional value, but other hay and forage machines have been around for far less time. Although disc mowers share a history with early horse-drawn sickle bar mowers, for example, the first rotating disc mower, which KUHN takes credit for inventing, only dates to 1967. Round balers have a longer history, with Allis-Chalmers receiving credit for being among the first companies to manufacture such machines in the early 1940s. It wasn’t until the early 1970s, though, when Gary Vermeer devised a plan for a one-man hay system that eventually evolved into what’s now considered the first modern round baler.

Hay and forage equipment manufacturers continually innovate, much like their counterparts in other categories, in order to improve performance, efficiency, and more. Mower conditioner/windrower makers, for example, are implementing precision-guidance technologies to provide a more accurate cutting performance with less manual labor required, while rake/tedder makers are creating models able to adapt to varying ground conditions to gather more crop. Integrated bale wrappers with round balers, square balers able to handle varying crops and crop conditions, tub grinders and bale processors compatible with round and square bales, and handheld controls and stabilizer hitches with bale accumulators/movers are other examples.
