About Grain Handling & Storage Equipment

After months spent performing tillage, planting, spraying, harvesting, and other tasks, farmers need equipment to handle and store the thousands of bushels of grain they bring in from the field. Grain handling and storage equipment includes grain bins, grain augers, grain conveyors, grain vacs, grain dryers, grain elevators/legs, and other grain handling/storage equipment such as grain cleaners, cross augers, moisture meters, grain analyzers, and more. Whether it’s a grain elevator/leg, bin, dryer, or auger, the machines and structures in the grain handling/storage equipment category represents a wide array of machines suitable for everything from one-man to large-scale operations.

Grain dryers, for example, vary natural air, low-temp, high-temp, and continuous flow methods to dry grain, and continuous flow can include cross-flow, concurrent flow, counter-flow options. Grain vacs, meanwhile, may include stationary and portable models mounted on trailers that variously use a suction intake and auger discharge method or air pressure to push out the grain. Grain bins can stand anywhere from 15 to 135 feet (4.6 to 41.1 meters) or taller and can hold anywhere from a few hundred bushels to hundreds of thousands of bushels. There are stiffened and unstiffened varieties that feature unique designs that promote enhanced airflow and operator access.

Across the board, grain handling and storage equipment is designed to reduce the time that growers spend loading and unloading grain, combatting moisture and spoilage issues, handling grain with greater care, and providing ever-safer operation for operators.

    The Roots Of Storage

Although some of the equipment in the grain handling/storage category is relatively modern, other equipment traces back to the earliest inventors and growers. While Canadian Peter Pakosh is credited with inventing the first grain auger, for example, some historians draw a direct connection from the screw-type model he built in 1945 to the Archimedes’ screw (or water screw) used to pump irrigation water in ancient Greece. Pit-type silos, which grain bins are closely related to, are considered to also date back to early civilizations that used them to store grain long-term. The creation of the first modern silo, a wooden structure that held grain, is credited to Fred Hatch in 1873.
