Read More (About Motorcycles)Similar to the evolutionary path that automobiles took, there was a time when classifying the different types of motorcycles in existence was easy simply because there weren’t that many to classify. Those days, however, are long past, both for automobiles and motorcycles. Since 1894, when the Hildebrand & Wolfmüller became the world’s first mass-produced motorcycle and the first machine to carry the “motorcycle” moniker, motorbikes have evolved to the point that there are now myriad categories, including the following categories of motorcycles for sale on TractorHouse.com.
With cruisers for sale from some of the most familiar motorcycle manufacturers in the world, including Harley-Davison, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Indian, cruisers are built to do exactly what the category’s name suggests: They provide a relaxed, near-reclining riding position on a low-slung seat, with higher-positioned handlebars, a larger rear tire, lower ground clearance, and slightly forward foot pegs.
With high-performance engines, lightweight frames, higher seats, lower handlebars, and foot pegs set slightly to the rear, sport bikes like Kawasaki’s Ninja or Yamaha’s Supersport are built to resemble aerodynamic bullets that provide superior speed and handling, whether on the street or the racetrack. Like many modern machines, today’s sport bikes are also loaded to the gills with high-tech safety features to keep the rubber on the road and to keep you upright.
Be it a Honda Gold Wing, Indian Roadmaster, or BMW K1600, touring motorcycles are built to provide a comfortable ride over the long haul, with large engines and fuel tanks, rear-set handlebars, forward-set foot pegs, large fairings, heated seats and handlebars, GPS, and communication and entertainment systems.
With popular models available from Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, Yamaha, and other manufacturers, the dirt bike category is generally populated with bikes with lighter frames, knobby tires, taller seats, long-travel suspensions, and powerful acceleration. Dirt bikes are engineered to handle the dirt, mud, rocks, hills, jumps, and more that make off-road rides so much fun.
Also referred to as “dual-purpose bikes,” dual-sport motorcycles combine the looks, smaller engine, higher seat, lack of fairings and windshield, and other characteristics of dirt bikes with the mirrors, horn, lights, and other basic components of street-legal bikes. In other words, dual-sport models let you travel down city streets and highways but also go off-road to tackle trails and rougher terrain.
Due to their generally simplified operation and design, standard bikes are considered a good option for newer riders seeking general-purpose motorcycles. Also referred to as “naked bikes” or “roadsters,” standard bikes typically forgo fairings, a large windshield, cargo compartments, and other amenities found in larger touring models in favor of providing a solid, affordable, all-around bike.
Be it the Can-Am Spyder, Polaris Slingshot, Harley-Davidson Tri Glide Ultra, or even the smaller Honda Gyro, trikes, or “three-wheelers,” have a distinctive look that’s hard to miss. A few, like the Spyder put two wheels up front, but most have them to the rear in a classic tricycle configuration; either way, trikes provide an especially stable ride that mixes in large doses of comfort in the form of large seats, relaxed riding positions, and plenty of bells and whistles.
Possessing engines that generally start in the 50-cc neighborhood but stretch potentially to the 500-cc mark, scooters are distinguished by their lightweight step-through frames, low clearance, enclosed engine and mechanical parts, smaller wheels, and low noise output. Well-suited for commuters and urban riders, scooters are easy and economical to operate.
A hybrid of sport and touring models, sport touring bikes offer the storage and added comfort (and, in many cases, storage) you’d expect in a touring model with the lighter weight, tighter handling, and speedier engine of a sport bike. The result is a motorcycle that riders can use for weekend road trips as well as quick jaunts across town.
With a small fuel tank, a light operating weight, a long-travel suspension, knobby tires, and other race-ready features, motocross motorcycles are stripped-down dirt bikes painstakingly engineered to handle the tight turns, jumps, and other obstacles found in off-road racing. Supermoto models, meanwhile, are designed to race off-road and on paved surfaces.
Whether originating from Europe, America, or Japan, vintage motorcycles belong to a category that’s becoming increasingly popular and that features such models as the Honda CB77 Super Hawk, Triumph Bonneville, Norton Commando, Indian Chief, and Royal Enfield Bullet. While the exact traits that make a bike “vintage” are open to debate, most experts agree that vintage models stem from a period beginning in the late 1960s and running through the early 1980s.
Considered more affordable but less powerful than scooters, mopeds have been around for decades. Traditionally, they’ve provided pedals and a gas engine but offered little to no storage or much in the way of protective safety features. Today’s models generally provide a 50-cc or less gas or electric engine and performance that’s generally limited to 30 mph (48 km/h) or less.
TractorHouse.com’s Other Motorcycles subcategory is a catch-all for bikes that don’t fit neatly into the site’s other dozen motorcycle types, including smaller bikes like pit motorcycles and mini bikes, pocket bikes, and so on. Honda miniMOTO bikes like the Grom, Monkey, and Navi are common here. You’ll also find unusual machines like Yamaha’s Niken Leaning Multi Wheel (LMW) bike, which has two front wheels and operates a bit like a trike except that it leans like a motorcycle.
If you’re in the market for a new or used motorcycle, TractorHouse.com lets you browse listings for hundreds of models for sale, across all the categories described above.
