    About John Deere

    The Early Years

In 1837 in Grand Detour, Illinois, John Deere created the first steel plow designed for farmers tilling sticky prairie soil in the American Midwest. The momentum from this innovation propelled Deere’s business to the forefront of the agricultural industry. The company was incorporated as Deere & Company in 1868.

In 1918, John Deere entered the tractor business with two models- the Waterloo Boy and the John Deere Tractor. The company’s first combine harvester, the John Deere No. 2, followed nine years later.

    A New Generation

John Deere introduced the world to its “New Generation of Power” in 1960 with the advent of its first 4- and 6-cylinder tractors. These models were more powerful than Deere’s 2-cylinder models and were easier to operate with convenient controls, better visibility, and improved seat suspensions.

Over the years, John Deere introduced several industry firsts, including rollover protection systems and a 4-row cotton picker. John Deere states that its famous leaping deer logo, first registered as a trademark in 1876, is the longest continuously used American trademark among Fortune 500 companies.

    Expansion

Deere & Company has grown immensely, expanding its farm equipment lineup through the addition of planters, grain drills, harvesting equipment, and combines. Eventually, John Deere added a construction and forestry business that manufactures backhoes, wheel loaders, crawler excavators, forestry harvesters, and dozers, as well as a turf equipment business that produces lawn and garden tractors and attachments, professional turf and golf course mowers, and a line of Gator utility vehicles.

John Deere has also expanded its offerings beyond equipment. John Deere provides customers with data management tools, telematics and precision ag products, and remote field and water management applications.
