    About Grain Elevators & Legs

Grain elevators, also known as “grain legs” or “grain bucket elevators,” are machines used on farms and at elevators, processing plants, and elsewhere to vertically convey large quantities of grain and other materials quickly via the use of rubber belts or chains, buckets, pulleys, sprockets, electric motors, and other components. Bucket elevators are used in numerous industries for various applications, including to move seed, fertilizer, sand, powders, pellets, and other dry materials. Grain elevators feature steel construction, can stand anywhere from about 50 to 150 feet (15.2 to 45.7 meters) or taller, and are a reliable, cost-effective way to move grain gently but at a rate of thousands of bushels per hour.

    Elevator Types

There are, generally speaking, three main types of bucket elevators: centrifugal bucket, continuous bucket, and positive discharge. There are various configurations of these types available, including continuous-single and double-chain varieties. Centrifugal-bucket elevators’ buckets dig into a grain pile and quickly moving the load upward. Continuous-bucket models entail material being gravity-fed to buckets rather than buckets digging into a pile. These elevators often move more slowly and are used to convey more fragile material types. Positive-discharge models are often used to convey commodities rather than grain at much slower speeds.

    Common Features

Many grain elevator manufacturers make their products available with a variety of bucket sizes for use in different applications, and some provide smartly positioned access doors for easier maintenance. You’ll also find elevators equipped with adjustable throat plates, inspection doors, access ladders, and distribution and service platforms. Additionally, some elevators feature weatherproof construction, are made from stainless steel, galvanized steel, or an abrasive-resistant alloy.
