    About Zero-Turn Mowers

Although zero-turn mowers (also referred to as “ZTRs” and “zero-turn radius mowers”) are generally thought to offer less-stable performance on hills compared to riding lawn mowers, they are the ideal mower choice for covering large, predominately flat yards and open spaces. Sporting rear-engine designs and wide cutting decks that can measure 42 to 54 inches (107 to 137 centimeters) wide or more, zero-turn mowers have traditionally been the go-to choice for commercial turf management operations, although numerous consumer ZTR mowers are available, as well. Further, sales of consumer zero-turn models are reportedly rapidly closing the gap with riding mowers, which are designed for use a couple times a week. Conversely, the superior power and construction of zero-turn mowers’ frames and components make them suitable for daily use.

    Zero-Turn Mower Characteristics

Although a small number of zero-turn mowers provide a steering wheel for navigation purposes, the majority use twin steer levers, bars, or pedals to control navigation. Combined with two pivoting front wheels, the lever-steering approach lets ZTR mowers turn on a dime, giving them greater maneuverability to mow around trees, bushes, flowerbeds, and other obstacles. Comparable in size to lawn or garden tractors, zero-turn mowers offer more powerful engines, generally falling into the 20- to 30-horsepower (15- to 22-kilowatt) range, which makes them faster than riding lawn mowers (roughly 8 mph vs. 4 to 5 mph). In fact, some experts claim that zero-turn mowers can mow a lawn in half as much time as a riding lawn mower or less.

With prices than can extend beyond $5,000, ZTR mowers are more expensive than other mower types, despite not being considered as versatile as lawn and garden tractors that can use various attachments to tackle a wider range of tasks.

    Common Features

In addition to larger fuel tanks that allow for longer uninterrupted use, zero-turn mowers can variously include wash-out ports, intelligent braking systems, vibration-reducing designs, mobile device and app connectivity for monitoring maintenance status, and easily adjustable cutting heights.
