These vehicles, typically used in agriculture, construction, forestry, and other industries as well as for recreation, offer four-wheel drive and are adept at navigating challenging terrain.

UTVs can be customized to suit specific needs with different attachments, including winches, snowplows, toolboxes, sprayers, and more. Their versatility, off-road capabilities, and hauling and towing capacities make UTVs especially handy for getting to and from remote and otherwise hard-to-reach jobsites on farms and ranches. You’ll commonly find them engaged in such tasks as fence maintenance, small-plot crop spraying, cattle management, and others.

UTVs vs. ATVs

While UTVs and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) alike are at home going where there are no roads, they differ in several respects. ATVs are often smaller, with less payload capacity and front-and-back seating rather than side-by-side seating. UTVs can hold up to six riders, while ATVs typically accommodate one or two.

UTVs typically offer a more car-like driving experience, with a steering wheel and pedals for acceleration and braking. ATVs, on the other hand, are controlled using handlebars for steering and thumb or hand controls for acceleration and braking. UTVs also usually have a frame, cargo box, and other features that leave them more closely resembling jeeps or golf carts than ATVs. Many UTV manufacturers also offer rollover protection systems (ROPs) if not fully enclosed cabs, the latter of which often have heating and air conditioning for comfort in all types of weather.

Types Of UTVs

Whether you’re looking for the thrill of tackling challenging terrain or working in demanding environments, utility UTVs offer versatility across a wide range of model types that may or may not include tipping cargo beds and trailer hitches. Sport and recreation UTVs, meanwhile, push the envelope in terms of power and performance regardless of the terrain. They are relatively lightweight, aerodynamic vehicles with heavy-duty shocks and suspensions that typically offer 40 to 175 horsepower (30 to 130 kilowatts) and accommodate two to four people. Youth UTVs are typically smaller and have modest engine sizes such as 150cc to 229cc.
