    About Row Crop Forage Headers

When paired with a header, a combine harvester is one of a farm operation’s most important pieces of equipment. Row crop forage headers are one of several types of headers used with a combine harvester or forage harvester to harvest forage crops, which can include grasses, maize, and other harvested plants typically transformed into silage or haylage to feed to livestock.

    Row Crop Forage Header Features

Harvester headers generally fall into one of three main categories: platform, row crop, and forage headers. More recently, “all-crop” headers have become increasingly popular. Forage headers, in turn, can be separated into three subcategories: row crop, rotary, and windrow. Row crop forage headers in general include long points, also sometimes referred to as “snouts” or “fingers,” which extend in between the crop rows and guide the plants into the header for cutting and processing. You’ll often find row crop forage headers and corn headers lumped in together, although some experts distinguish between the two by noting that row crop forage headers use belts and stationary or rotary knives, while corn headers use gathering chains and rollers to snap off the corn cob.

    Machine Capabilities

With the ability to handle anywhere from a few to 12 or more rows in a pass, row crop forage headers chop the plant, gather it using belts or chains, and direct the plant to the middle of the header using an auger where it’s pulled into the combine for processing. In addition to headers capable of handling downed corn, there are also kits available to convert a corn header into a row crop header to provide the ability to harvest additional crops.
