    About Livestock Trailers

Livestock trailers, otherwise known as "stock trailers," "hog carts," or "cattle trailers," are essential pieces of farm equipment for transporting cows, pigs, sheep, and other livestock. Some livestock trailers consist of a basic metal frame with slats for sidewalls and an open roof, while others are fully enclosed and designed to hold one or more animals comfortably for longer journeys.

There’s more to finding the right livestock trailer than choosing build material, although that is an important consideration as steel is often less expensive and aluminum is less likely to corrode. Use your intended application as a guide when shopping for such trailers, whether it be to transport your prized horse to a show, bring cattle to market, or simply move animals around the farm. You’ll want to consider the type of animal you plan to move as well, because that may change the style and configuration of trailer required.

Another key consideration when shopping for livestock trailers is to ensure they have proper airflow and ventilation for the animals. This isn’t an issue for open trailers, but with enclosed trailers it’s important to make sure the animals are not only secure during transport, but that they can also breathe easily, especially when moving them during the hot summer months.

    Types Of Livestock Trailers

Although the exact style can vary widely, livestock trailers are either tag-along/bumper-pull or gooseneck models. They either have slatted sides or walls with holes punched out for airflow and often have metal or wood floors.

Some trailers in this category have a mesh-like material for a floor, which is ideal for airflow, but may limit the size of animals they can support. For enclosed trailers, you may want to consider adding a layer of hay or a mat to prevent animals from slipping and potentially injuring themselves in transit.

Livestock trailers sometimes have a rear door that doubles as a ramp when dropped down, but other types have hydraulic lowering systems for loading and unloading animals. Some models may also have a side door that allows someone to enter the trailer for feeding or grooming purposes, for example, or it could be used to load animals, as well.

While some livestock trailers are wide open inside and allow animals to move around freely, others have built-in dividers where you can keep animals separated to reduce the risk of injury during transport. There are also dedicated horse trailers designed to haul one or more animals, with room for them to sleep comfortably on long-distance trips. They also have space for a wide range of accessories, including fans, hay bags or nets, hanging door caddies for storing grooming supplies and horse tack, and much more.

    Find The Right Livestock Trailer

You will find a large selection of new and used livestock trailers for sale on TractorHouse from such popular brands as Ifor Williams, Joskin, Rolland, and many others, often alongside a number of custom-made units. Rolland, for example, sells the Rollvan series of cattle trailers that ranges from the 15.4-foot (4,700-millimeter) Rollvan 47 to the 27.9-ft. (8,500-mm) Rollvan 85, both of which are 2,300 mm (7.5-ft) wide.

Ifor Williams also sells several livestock trailers, including 14-ft (4,267-mm) tri-axle units designed to transport alpacas, cattle, llamas, pigs, and sheep. Livestock trailers from Graham Edwards can either be pulled by a pickup truck or a tractor, and the company’s demount trailers have wheels under the trailer body so the body and chassis can be used separately.

You will also find hundreds of new and used livestock semitrailers, livestock trailers, and horse trailers cross-listed from TruckPaper.com. These include trailers from Barrett, EBY, Merritt, Wilson, and other leading manufacturers.
