    About Lawn Mowers

There’s a lot to consider when purchasing a lawn mower. Blade and deck size, operator comfort and controls, and engine type are all important factors, but you’ll often first need to decide among the different types of mowers available. The size of the area you need to mow and its terrain are the biggest factors in that decision. Riding, stand-on, walk-behind, and zero-turn are the four most popular options when comparing new and used lawn mowers for sale.

    Riding

As the name suggests, a riding lawn mower carries the operator in a seated position while mowing. Some riding lawn mowers look like small tractors and, as a result, are called lawn tractors. Riding lawn mowers are considered a solid, timesaving choice for those who routinely mow yards measuring a half-acre or more in size, as well as for those with hilly or rough terrain to maintain. Riding lawn mowers are usually less expensive than zero-turn mowers but are slower and lack a zero-turn mower’s ability to make sharp turns, although some include four-wheel steering to enhance maneuverability.

    Stand-On

With a stand-on mower, the operator has a small platform to the rear of the machine to ride while mowing. A stand-on mower typically offers better visibility and reduced operator vibration compared to a riding lawn mower, and is often best for smaller areas, slopes, and highly landscaped areas where easy maneuverability in tight spots is important. Due to their slower operating speeds, stand-on mowers are not considered as suitable as riding and zero-turn mowers for large, wide-open spaces.

    Walk-Behind

Walk-behind mowers typically work best in smaller areas and are among the lightest, least-expensive mowers available. They’re also valued for their maneuverability in confined spaces and around trees, flowerbeds, and other landscaping objects. These mowers can either be push mowers, requiring the operator to move the mower forward, or self-propelled, where the operator only needs to guide the mower. Battery-powered electric mowers are increasing in popularity thanks to their ability to reduce emissions and noise.

    Zero-Turn

When you have large, wide-open spaces to mow, a zero-turn (ZTR) lawn mower is ideal. Although a small number of ZTR mowers provide a steering wheel for navigation purposes, the majority of them offer twin steer levers, bars, or pedals to control navigation. Combined with two pivoting front wheels, the lever-steering approach essentially enables ZTR mowers to turn on a dime. Zero-turn mowers typically have faster forward speeds than most riding lawn mowers. Sporting rear-engine designs and wide cutting decks that can measure between 42 and 54-plus inches (107 to more than 137 centimeters), ZTR mowers have traditionally been the go-to choice for commercial turf-management operations, although numerous consumer-minded ZTR mowers are available as well.
