About Dry Fertilizer Applicators
Dry fertilizer applicators spread fertilizers such as urea across the ground in dry (or granular) form, adding nutrients to the soil and enhancing plant growth for various types of crops. These machines can be easily distinguished from liquid or anhydrous applicators by a number of prominent features including hoppers or wagons, augers, conveyors, spinning mechanisms, and other components they use to apply fertilizer through a broadcast spreader mechanism or boom.
KUHN Axis H-EMC-W Dry Fertilizer Applicator
By contrast, subsoil liquid and anhydrous fertilizer applicators use equipment such as knives, coulters, disks, and injectors to slice into the ground, inject liquid fertilizer directly into the soil, and then cover it up. Some dry applicator spreader systems can apply nutrients in banding and/or side-dressing style. Some manufacturers offer conversion kits and/or models that can be used either for dry or liquid application.
Features & Options
Dry applicators are typically used in the spring before planting or in fall after harvest. They come in both pull-type and mounted varieties and depending on their size are suited for use on large farms, orchards, vineyards, groves, small acreages, and other growing environments. Some applicators support the use of extra or tractor-mounted bins to expand the amount of product they can carry and apply between stops to refill. Some applicators can make use of one or more separable bins to simultaneously apply multiple products.
New Leader’s stainless-steel L4000G4 MultApplier, for example, lets growers configure it with a twin-bin hopper with adjustable 60/40 split. The MultApplier’s 60- to 120-foot (18.3- to 36.6-meter) spreading width is also indicative of the capacity you’ll find in the category. KUHN’s 30.2 Q from the firm’s popular Axis series, meanwhile, is a good example of the technologies available, including items such as variable rate control and an automated guidance system. The Axis is equipped with sensors that monitor fertilizer levels and help maintain a steady application rate to match your driving speed, and allows you to control a wealth of machine functions from an in-cab control terminal.
