Read More (About Challenger)Caterpillar launched the first Challenger-branded tractor, the Challenger 65, in 1986. The tractor quickly gained recognition for its innovative Mobil-Trac rubber track technology (an updated version of which is still in use on current Challenger tractors) that reduced soil compaction and increased traction. In the following 30-plus years, the brand expanded its equipment lineup to cater to the needs of diverse farming operations.
Agco, an established company in the agriculture equipment industry, acquired the Challenger brand from Caterpillar in 2002 when Cat decided to exit the farm machinery business to focus on its construction product lines. Agco integrated the Challenger brand into its existing product lineup, leveraging its expertise and resources to develop and market Challenger products. Agco also owns the Fendt, GSI, Massey Ferguson, and Valtra brands.
At the height of its popularity, Challenger offered compact, midsize, and large tractors, combine harvesters, TerraGator floaters, Rogator self-propelled sprayers, and a line of hay tools that included round and square balers, mower conditioners, and windrowers.
Then in 2020, Agco began phasing out the Challenger brand, paring its product catalog down to two high-horsepower tractor series (more on these below) and shifting Challenger’s Rogator applicators to be marketed and sold under the Fendt brand. Agco now sells TerraGator floaters under the TerraGator brand.
By the early 2020s, Challenger’s product line focused on seven high-performance tractor models in two families, both designed for heavy-duty fieldwork. The MT700 series includes the MT738, MT740, and MT743 tractors, ranging from 380 to 431 in rated engine horsepower (279 to 317 kilowatts).
All are powered by 9.8-liter, 7-cylinder Agco Power engines, and all are equipped with AccuDrive CVT transmissions and the Mobil-Trac system. They come standard with 58 gallons-per-minute (220 liters-per-minute) hydraulic systems, but buyers can select an optional dual-pump, dual-circuit 116 GPM (439 LPM) system.
Challenger’s M800 lineup includes the MT851, MT856, MT862, and MT867 tractors with engines rated for 511 to 673 HP (376 to 492 kW). They also have AccuDrive CVTs and the Mobil-Trac rubber track system but are powered by 15.2-L 6-cylinder engines manufactured by Man.
