    About Anhydrous Fertilizer Applicators

Anhydrous fertilizer applicators are one of three subsets of fertilizer applicators, the other two being dry and liquid applicators. Like other applicator types, anhydrous models feed nutrients to crop, helping promote better plant growth and higher crop yields.

Whereas dry applicators broadcast fertilizer using a spreader mechanism or distribute it using extended booms, anhydrous models function like subsoil liquid applicators. Using a combination of tanks, pumps, coulters, disks, knives, injectors, wing sealers, and other components, they cut into the soil to depths generally ranging from 3 to 8 inches (7.6 to 20.3 centimeters), inject fertilizer into the cut, and cover it up with soil so as to trap the product where crop plants’ roots will absorb it.

    The Application Process

Depending on grower preference, soil type and condition, and other factors, anhydrous applications occur in the spring before planting and/or the fall after harvest for crops such as corn, wheat, and others. The applicator applies liquid nitrogen in the form of anhydrous ammonia, which is pulled behind the implement in highly pressurized tanks. As the solution leaves the tank and is injected in the soil, it reacts with available moisture, making it available for absorption.

    Features & Examples

Applicators typically use a multi-section jointed frame so as to closely follow ground contours for accurate, efficient placement in no-till and other tillage conditions. A front hitch connects to the tractor, while rear hitches enable one or more anhydrous tanks and possibly other implements for seedbed preparation. Control features often include section shut-off, application rate control, and adjustable depth control. You may also find automated guidance and other precision-application technologies on board that can boost efficiency and save fuel and product costs by preventing skips and overlaps.

John Deere’s 2430C Nutrient Applicator and Case IH’s Nutri-Placer series are good examples of the category’s offerings. The 2430C spans 19 to 25 rows, depending on configuration, with 30-inch (76-centimeter) placement spacing and a 47.6- to 62.6-foot (14.5- to 19-meter) possible working width. Nutri-Placer models like the 930 HSLD use a single-coulter design that creates minimal soil disturbance and a walking tandem press for soil firming. Case IH Advanced Farming Systems tools, meanwhile, let growers make helpful yield, prescription, and soil sampling maps, and more.
