    About Small Square Balers

Square balers are distinct from round balers in that they create easily stackable bales, which are often better suited for transport. While round balers and large square balers can pick up more hay in a single pass, those larger bales typically require a tractor or another piece of hay and forage equipment to move them. Small square balers, on the other hand, create bales that are light enough for a person to carry. Small bales may not be realistic for larger operations, but they still have their place on smaller farms and acreages.

    Common Small Square Baler Features

2020 New Holland BC5070 small square baler

While exact features vary from model to model, most small square balers feed hay into a bale chamber where a plunger compresses the hay and cuts it into a rectangular shape. The machine then ties the bale with twine and drops it onto the ground, although there are some models that can throw the bale onto a coupled trailer. Other hay and forage equipment used after this process includes bale accumulators, or movers, which gather, move, and stack bales as well as bale wrappers that can protect bales from the elements. However, due to their smaller size, some operations may choose to rely on manual labor to move, load, and unload small bales.

The size of bales produced by a small square baler will vary, and some machines have settings where you can pick a size from a given range. For example, Case IH’s SB541 small square baler and New Holland’s BC5070 small square baler both produce the same 14- by 18-inch (35.6- by 45.7-centimeter) bales, but they also support bale lengths of between 12 and 52 inches (30.5 and 132 cm). That change in length will affect overall square footage and weight, which are important considerations whether you plan to move the bales by hand or with another machine. By comparison, a large square bale can measure in at up to 4 x 4 x 9 feet (1.2 x 1.2 x 2.7 meters) and weigh as much as a ton (0.9 metric tons).
