    About Feed Grinders

Cattle, hogs, sheep, and other livestock all benefit from whole grain feed that’s been processed into smaller, easier-to-digest pieces. Feed grinders do just that, taking corn, oats, or soybeans and pulverizing them to just the right size to give livestock the maximum nutritional value. The grinders come in three main types, grinder mixers, roller mills, and hammer mills.

Art’s Way 7165 Hammer Mill Feed Grinder

    Hammer Mills

Hammer mills process the grain using either a series of swinging or stationary steel bars (hammers) to grind the grain. In most hammer mills, the hammers force the grain against a screen until the grain is the desired size and passes through the screen, but newer “screenless” models can use airflow instead of a screen to sort the grain that is the desired size.

    Roller Mills

Roller mills use rollers instead of hammers to cut, crush, or tear the grain into smaller pieces. A roller mill has two to six rollers according to the desired size of the end product.

    Grinder Mixers

Grinder mixers use either a hammer mill or roller mill to perform the grinding operation and can also mix in other feeds, minerals, or ingredients for a more complete finished product.

    Popular Brands

Gehl is credited with creating the first hammer mill meant for grinding grain, and remains a popular choice for used feed grinders and grinder mixers. Art’s Way, Automatic Equipment Manufacturing, New Holland, and Renn are among other manufacturers that offer new and used feed grinders for sale. Art’s Way grinder mixers come in a variety of configurations, including portable and stationary models with three mixing tank sizes and either hammer or roller mills. Automatic Equipment feed grinders include a screenless rotary mill, along with a high-volume roller mill and other electric or PTO-driven roller and hammer mills.
