Read More (About Nuhn)Nuhn Industries is a Canadian manufacturer of manure-handling equipment based in Sebringville, Ontario. The company emphasizes durability and efficiency in the products it designs to help its customers avert downtime and unnecessary fuel expenditure. Nuhn’s product line includes liquid manure spreaders, liquid manure agitators, liquid manure pumps, manure hauling equipment, and slurry tankers.
Nuhn’s manure tanks portfolio includes its Magnum series of non-steering tank trailers and the Electra-Steer series of electronically steered tank trailers, which reduce soil disturbance in the field. A hallmark of Nuhn design is tensioned baffles inside the tanks. The company also manufactures frac tank trailers, truck-mounted tanks, and oil vacuum tanks.
Manure pumps from Nuhn come in power take-off (PTO), hydraulic, and electric drive models with high agitation capacity. The company offers vertical pit pumps, lagoon pumps, and fill pipes on wheels. The manufacturer says that its triple port outlet ejects greater volumes of manure using half the fuel.
Nuhn’s Header Series’ Mech-TC sealing system employs a tungsten carbide mechanical seal to prevent contaminants from reaching the pump’s drive line and bearings. The company’s electric drive pumps come in vertical and floating configurations with one or two motors. Customer feedback claims that the floating electric pump can mix a manure pit in half the time of the competition, and pumps 20% faster while consuming 50% less fuel.
Nuhn’s Lagoon Crawlers is a self-propelled agitation boat with drop-down wheels and enough traction to climb out of steeper pits. It comes with a Belly Pack remote control. The operator can set up a GPS geofence around the Lagoon Crawler to tell it to agitate a particular area of the manure pit. Other specialty manure equipment from Nuhn includes the pull-type or self-propelled Alley Vac, which can clean up livestock shed floors and discharge manure into a lagoon or spread it over a field.
Manure injection equipment from Nuhn squirts fertilizer into the soil for reduced odor and faster intake by plants. To cover the vast majority of applications, Nuhn sells row crop injector systems in non-steering and Electra-Steer versions; a high-speed rotary injector; a spike injector for no-till farming and grass operations; an S-tine injector to blend and distribute manure into the soil; and tapered disc injectors to avoid clogging by cornstalks.
Nuhn’s Magnum series of rotary vane vacuum pumps include metered oil injection, flush ports, and dual internal air ports for high airflow volume. The company also makes campground equipment such as the towable Pro Vac professional vacuum tank sewage system, which can suction waste from RV holding tanks, portable toilets, and storage containers in the ground. Nuhn’s pull-type Pro Wagon comes with a pump and a translucent plastic tank instead of a steel tank.
The Nuhn company’s origins lie in 1902, when Simon Nuhn opened a blacksmith shop in Wartburg, Ontario, Canada. The entrepreneur started out making horseshoes, then wagons, harrows, and other farm equipment. His son Wilfred and grandson Dennis carried on the family business, building and repairing agricultural machinery.
In 1964, Dennis put together his first manure pump using a car’s rear end. The following year, he created the first Nuhn Industries liquid manure tank using an old gas tank and some airplane tires. The company’s focus turned to developing and manufacturing manure management equipment.
Dennis designed the Magnum Series of manure tanks in 1985 at the company’s more recent headquarters in Sebringville, Ontario, near the city of Stratford.
In 2003, Dennis and his crew invented the rugged Quad Train manure tank, an industry first. His son Ian designed and patented the efficient Triple Port Header Series Pump in 2009 at the age of 19. Ian and his team came up with a Lagoon Crawler prototype, the first amphibious manure agitation boat, in 2013.
That same year, Nuhn produced the tri-axle Electra-Steer tank family with excellent flotation and advanced electronic steering. The industry’s first tandem steering tank, the Nuhn Quad-Steer articulating tank, debuted in 2016, followed the next year by the 12-inch (305-millimeter) Header Series pump line with white iron housings to resist abrasive sand.
