    About Large Square Balers

Whereas round balers create cylindrical bales that are movable with a tractor, square balers generate easily stackable bales that are well-suited for transport on a trailer or are movable via another piece of hay and forage equipment. Large square balers pack more hay into each bale than small square balers, making them ideal for larger farming operations. A challenge with the large square bale size is that, unlike small bales that one person can generally lift, large bales require additional machinery to load and unload.

    Features & Specifications

The exact features of a large square baler will vary depending on its manufacturer. Most models, however, feed hay into a bale chamber where a plunger cuts and compresses the hay into a rectangular shape. The machine then ties the bale with twine and, depending on the model, either drops the bale to the ground or transfers it to a trailer coupled to the baler. Due to their size, large bales typically require additional hay and forage equipment, such as a bale accumulator or mover, to transport. For longer-term storage or to shield bales from the elements, some operations use bale wrappers to provide extra protection.

While bale sizes can vary among large square balers, common sizes include heights and widths of 3 x 3 feet (0.9 x 0.9 meters), 3 x 4 feet (0.9 x 1.2 meters), and 4 x 4 feet, all with bale lengths of up to 9 feet (2.7 meters). Many large square balers give producers the option to adjust bale length to suit their equipment, storage areas, and other needs. Case IH’s LB434, for example, produces 2.9- x 3.9-foot (0.9- x 1.2-meter) bales that range in length from 3.9 to 9 feet (1.2 to 2.7 meters) and that typically weigh about 1,600 pounds (725.7 kilograms). New Holland’s BigBaler lineup, meanwhile, produces bales ranging from 2.3 x 2.6 by 9 feet (0.7 by 0.8 x 2.7 meters) to 2.95 x 3.9 by 9 feet (0.9 x 1.2 x 2.7 meters). For reference, small square balers from these same manufacturers produce 1.2- x 1.5-foot (0.37- x 0.46-meter) bales that range from 1 to 4.3 feet (0.3 to 1.31 meters) in length.
