Grain augers/conveyors, also called screw conveyors or screw elevators, transport grain from a truck, wagon, or cart typically to storage bins. Most models are mobile – powered by electric motors, internal combustion engines, or a tractor’s power supply – and can pair with such accessories as hydraulic winch lifts and hoppers.

Leading manufacturers and sellers of new and pre-owned grain augers/conveyors include Batco, Brandt, Convey-All, Farm King, Harvest International, Mayrath, Peck, Sudenga, Universal, Westfield, and Wheatheart.

Typically constructed of a metal, enclosed tube measuring 10 inches or more in diameter, grain augers contain a rotating shaft with flighting that pulls in grain and pushes it outward. Some models incorporate technology to extend the flighting’s life. Conveyors, which may use a belt, auger, or other method to move grain, are generally more expensive but are considered better at handling specialty crops and seeds vulnerable to damage, longer lasting, and needing less power.

Canadian Peter Pakosh is credited with inventing the first grain auger, a screw-type model reportedly built in his home in 1945, after failing to convince his employer Massey Harris (later Massey Ferguson) of its merit. Pakosh developed a prototype in 1946, eventually started his own company, and mass-produced his models under the Versatile brand.
