    About Forage Harvesters

John Deere 9900 Self-Propelled Forage Harvester

Forage harvesters, also known as silage harvesters, foragers, or choppers, are implements used to harvest plants to produce silage. The first forage harvester, created by William J. Conroy in 1891, used a sickle elevated by a cylindrical curved-bar cutterhead to cut the crop. Though not commercially successful, Conroy’s machine would go on to inspire other models, including those of Sir Charles Ross, University of Wisconsin professor Floyd Waldo Duffee, Erwin Saiberlich of the Fox River Tractor Co., and Gehl. Modern harvesters feature a cutterhead or flywheel with attached knives to chop the forage which is then blown through a chute to a wagon for hauling. Because the type of cutting equipment needed varies according to the type of silage, multiple heads are available.

    Types Of Forage Harvesters

Forage harvesters come in both self-propelled and pull-type models. Self-propelled forage harvesters are all-in-one units that are similar in some respects to combine harvesters, whereas pull-type forage harvesters are implements that are pulled by a tractor and are often used in smaller operations. Both types often include a processor for corn.
