    About Field Cultivators

Case IH Tiger-Mate 255 Field Cultivator

Field cultivators have been in use in various forms since the earliest days of farming. They provide a way to aerate soil, work crop residue into the soil, control weeds, and otherwise prepare a seedbed for planting. Early field cultivators were pulled by humans or animals such as horses or mules before the invention of tractors, which pull field cultivators using either a three-point hitch or drawbar. Modern field cultivators use a series of shanks or shovels mounted on a frame to break up and condition soil for seedbed preparation and weed control. Many field cultivators also have finishing tools, such as spike-tooth or tine harrows, or round-bar crumblers, to smooth soil.

    Features

Field cultivators come in a range of working widths (up to 60 feet/18.3 meters or more; some with hydraulic wings for easier transportation between fields), allowing farmers to best match their acreage needs and horsepower requirements. Manufacturers are working continuously to improve field cultivators. Recent upgrades include features such as precision, laser-cut structural steel frames that are robotically welded for strength, and “split-the-middle” shank spacing designs for more consistent depths and improved field coverage. Other innovations include floating hitches to provide accurate depth on uneven ground or technology to allow the operator to adjust sweep depth and down pressure during operation to adapt to changing field conditions.
