    About Fendt

For centuries, the Fendt family were known as craftsmen in their hometown of Marktoberdorf, Bavaria, in Germany, producing tower clocks, violins, and more. The family also operated a farm and had a small trade in ag equipment. When Johann Georg Fendt took over in 1898, he began selling and servicing Deutz stationary engines; by 1928, he had built the company’s first agricultural machine, a motorized grass mower.

    Fendt 1042 Vario

In the 1930s, Johann’s sons Xaver and Hermann Fendt built Europe’s first 6-horsepower (4.5-kilowatt) tractor and called it the Dieselross, which is German for “diesel horse.” This officially marked the genesis of Fendt’s tenure as an agricultural machinery manufacturer. Throughout the 1930s and ’40s, Fendt continued to improve the Dieselross, releasing new models with higher horsepower and Europe’s first travel-independent power shift power take-off (PTO).

    Continuous Evolution

The first 12-HP (9-kW) Fendt tool carrier with four mounting areas arrived in 1953 and the Favorit 1 was introduced in 1958, which was as remarkable for its appearance as for its technology. It had a 40-HP (30-kW) engine and a multi-speed close-ratio gearbox. Fendt went on to add specialty tractors for wine, hops, and fruit producers to its lineup in 1975 and in the 1970s, then added the high-horsepower Favorit LS range with as much as 252 HP (188 kW).

The 1980s saw the advent of the 300 Farmer range with travel speeds up to 25 mph (40 km/h), a four-wheel braking system, Fendt’s Turbomatic fluid flywheel, and a comfort cab with rubber bearings, as well as the 380 GTA all-around vision tractor. Fendt introduced the 800 series of high-horsepower tractors, which were the first to have turboshift transmissions and hydropneumatic suspensions for the cab and front axle, in 1993.

Other milestones from the decade included the world premiere of the 926 Vario, the first high-horsepower tractor with Fendt’s stepless Vario transmission, which was introduced at Agritechnica 1995, and Fendt’s first combine in 1998. Fendt was acquired by Agco in 1997.

    Into The New Century

Today, Fendt offers a full range of tractors, combine harvesters, planters, and hay tools, and introduced its first Cargo-series telehandler in 2019. Fendt produced its 250,000th Vario transmission in 2016, just over 20 years after its introduction, and remains a key feature of the company’s most popular models.
