    About Dry Floaters

Dry Floaters, sometimes referred to as “granular floaters,” are self-propelled chemical applicators often used for pre-plant or post-harvest applications with high coverage rates. For example, the TerraGator TG 8400C offers application rates ranging from 5 to 40 pounds per acre at 10 mph and has a 290-foot3 product bin with a front/rear bin split for applying multiple products.

These machines are called “floaters” because their large, wide flotation tires spread their contact weight over a much larger area than standard-profile tires, allowing them to move through fields with very little disruption to the topsoil.

Depending on crop needs, field conditions, equipment availability, and operational goals, choosing the most effective floater will depend on what part of the growing process you are in.

When To Choose Dry Floaters vs. Liquid Floaters

While dry and liquid floaters have a lot in common, there are particular situations where dry floaters excel. For example:

    • While liquid floaters are used for in-season applications or faster uptake, dry floaters excel in pre-plant and post-plant harvest applications.
    • While liquid floaters are ideal for precise, low-rate application, dry floaters offer a high-volume nutrient delivery (up to 1,200 lbs per acre or 1,354 kg per hectare).
    • Where liquid-based machines require more frequent refills (they traditionally have smaller tank sizes), dry (or granular) ones boast larger hoppers, allowing for longer operation.

What To Look For In A Dry Floater

As noted above, when looking for specific outcomes, choosing between a dry floater and a liquid floater will often hinge on which phase of the growing cycle will require the most applications.

Looking for a high coverage rate? One dry floater, the John Deere 800R, has a dry box capacity of 330 feet³ (9.34 meters³), can spread products at widths up to 90 ft (27.4 m), and has application speeds up to 30 mph (48 km/h). Total application costs will vary based on the product(s) you’re using, the equipment you choose, and local supply levels of some nutrients, which may be less expensive or more readily available in either dry or liquid form.
