Read More (About Chisel Plows)The chisel plow is a primary tillage tool that growers use in the fall and spring to prepare the ground for planting. Similar in scope to field cultivators and rippers, chisel plows help loosen and aerate the soil, enhance soil drainage, combat erosion, and help with weed prevention. A typical chisel plow may feature one or two rows of seven to 12 depth-adjustable shanks. These feature narrow or twisted points or wide sweeps or shovels that can measure up to a few inches wide and are spaced about 9 to 12 inches (23 to 30.5 centimeters) apart. Incorporated into a frame pulled by a tractor, the shanks open up the soil, usually to a depth between 8 to 18 in. (20.3 to 45.7 cm), but without inverting the soil and while leaving residue behind.
Chisel plows are generally pulled at speeds less than 5 mph (8 km/h), and they can require a tractor to supply anywhere from 10 to 15 horsepower (7.5 to 11 kilowatts) per shank. The selection of points or blades will depend on the type of soil preparation, weed prevention, residue management, and other seedbed preparation conditions a grower is after. For example, using twisting points will result in some soil being inverted and some residue being buried. Additionally, some chisel plows combine coulters or discs ahead of the shanks. For example, the coulter chisel concept of the Landoll 2100 Coulter Chisel allows for handling heavy residue at higher speeds.
Many chisel plows are designed for use with optional attachments such as a spike harrow, coil tines, rolling basket, and finishing reel located behind the shanks for soil-leveling purposes. For example, John Deere’s popular 2430 model is compatible with a knife-edge hydraulic rolling basket with internal basket scraper for use with wet field conditions, as well as with a coil-tine chisel plow harrow that’s well-suited for handling residue.
A chisel plow’s working width depends on how many blades are included. The Great Plains Ultra-Durable lineup includes three- and five-section models with 22 to 61 shanks and working widths from 21.9 to 45.9 feet (6.7 to 14 meters). Deere’s 2430 is available in rigid and rigid fold, three-section folding, and five-section folding frames from 11 to 60 ft. (3.35 m to 18.3 m). It is equipped with radial tires designed to improve machine flotation and transport, and utilizes TruSet technology that lets operators adjust shank depth on the fly with help from individual wheel sensors and electronic circuitry.
