Read More (About ATVs)The ATVs, or all-terrain vehicles, you think of today first appeared in 1970 when Honda introduced its ATC all-terrain cycle, which the company says was developed to give Honda dealers a product they could sell during winter months when sales of motorcycles typically dropped.
ATVs, also known as “quads,” “four-wheelers,” “quad bikes,” and “quad cycles,” are officially defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as vehicles that travel on low-pressure tires, have a seat that an operator rides by straddling, and use handlebars for steering. ATVs are typically smaller than utility vehicles (UTVs) and are designed to be nimbler and easier to handle.
ATVs were first designed more for recreational use but quickly started appearing on farms and in other settings for recreational and utility purposes. Most early ATVs operated on three wheels, but Suzuki is credited with developing 4-wheel ATVs, which became industry standard when three-wheel models were banned from being sold in the United States in the late 1980s because of safety concerns.
While some riders like to take an ATV out on a weekend drive over hills and across valleys, they can also serve as workhorses for ranchers and farmers to haul tools and equipment, ride fence lines, help out with crop spraying and other fieldwork, feeding and watering stock, and just to get around a large property, as they can sometimes go places where a pickup can’t. ATVs are often built for one rider, but there are models with extra room for a passenger.
Polaris built the first American-made ATV, and today you’ll find new and used ATVs for sale from Polaris and other manufacturers such as Arctic Cat, Can-Am, CFMoto, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha. Many offer ATV models designed for sport riding (typically lighter-weight, two-wheel drive, manual-transmission models) and others built for utility: these are often larger, four-wheel-drive models designed to haul small loads or tow small items.
Honda offers its Foreman, FourTrax Foreman, Rancher, Recon, and TRX lines of ATVs with features such as electric power steering to reduce steering effort and independent rear suspension allowing the rear wheels to move independently. Kawasaki ATVs for sale include its Brute Force lineup with two- and four-wheel-drive models and a variable front differential control that offers improved traction by letting operators control the torque delivered to the front wheels.
TractorHouse.com hosts hundreds of new and used ATVs for sale that range in price from under $1,000 up to $17,000 or more. Take advantage of our easy-to-use search function and filters to find the right ATV for you.
