    About Windrow Forage Headers

With a windrow forage header (aka a “pickup header”), operators can quickly and effectively clear a field of pre-cut windrows to increase pickup speed and optimize the end product for unloading. By contrast, row crop forage headers (sometimes lumped together with corn headers) are built with long points, also sometimes referred to as “snouts” or “fingers,” that extend between the crop rows and help direct the crop into the header, gather it using belts or chains, and chop the plant. Yet another forage header variant, rotary forage headers, are designed with a complex, side-by-side arrangement of cutter drums, blades, and choppers to cut and convey crop materials into a forage harvester.

    Key Features

Modern windrow forage headers are built to support high work rates and feature large diameter augers and tine bars to smoothly channel the windrowed crops and avoid plugging the header. Adjustable performance features help reduce debris and grain loss when working with bulky crops; when working with lighter crops or in better conditions, operators can speed up the belts and continually provide an even intake to pick up more acres in a day. To cleanly sweep the windrow crop off the ground, many windrow forage headers feature technologies to automatically maintain a uniform header height as the harvester moves over contours in the field.

    Width Options

Windrow forage headers are offered in a variety of widths to support the size of windrows you routinely work with. Smaller windrow forage headers often range between 5 and 7 feet (1.5 to 2.1 meters), while larger models are generally between 10 and 15 ft (3 to 4.5 m) in width. As with other types of implements, wider headers allow operators to cover more ground each pass and ultimately make fewer passes through the field.

    Small Grain & Specialty Crops

Manufacturers of windrow forage headers often offer specific configurations that match specific crop types. For example, one windrow forage header might be configured to function better with grass seed than small grain, while another is best used to pick up hay. Other windrow forage headers feature a more universal design approach, making them suitable for use with multiple crops.
