    About Walk-Behind Mowers

Walk-behind mowers are well-suited to mowing areas smaller than a half-acre and those with rough and/or varied terrain where riding, stand-on, and zero-turn mowers are impractical. Available in gasoline engine- and battery-electric motor-powered models—and even the occasional manual mower with no motor at all—walk-behind mowers are among the smallest, most affordable and lightweight mowers available. They’re also valued for the increased maneuverability they provide over riding lawn mowers when working in confined spaces and around trees, flowerbeds, and other landscaping objects.

    Styles

Walk-behind mowers are available in gas-powered models that an operator must push, manual reel push models that require no power to use, self-propelled (front, rear, and all-wheel) models that the operator only needs to guide, and gas-powered midsized floating-deck models that sport decks as wide as 60 inches or more. Commercial operations and homeowners with more demanding requirements and larger spaces to mow are typical users of floating-deck models. Battery-powered and corded electric mower models are also increasing in popularity thanks to their ability to reduce emissions and noise. Cordless electric mowers in particular are attracting more interest from buyers as the features they offer are drawing closer to those that gas-powered models provide.

    Features

Although the majority of gas-powered mowers still use a pull cord to start the engine, a growing number of models include electric starters. Some battery-powered mowers have batteries that are interchangeable with other compatible equipment, such as blowers or trimmers; many walk-behind mowers include foldable handles for space-saving storage, and some models include washout ports to attach a hose and clean underneath the deck. Other features you’ll find on selected walk-behind mowers include adjustable operating speeds, easily adjustable cutting height, the ability to start the mower without priming the engine, and the flexibility to easily switch between mulching and bagging applications without removing the bag.
