In addition to manufacturing a broad range of consumer vehicles, the company’s Polaris Government & Defense division manufactures utility vehicles for the U.S. military for U.S. allies. Polaris created this division in 2005 after having provided vehicles to the U.S. military since the 1980s.

    Polaris History

Polaris Industries was officially established in 1954 by brothers Edgar and Allan Hetteen and David Johnson. Named after the North Star due to its northern location, Polaris Industries operated in Roseau, Minnesota. In 1955, the company built its first snowmobile.

Polaris’ first snowmobile included parts from various sources, with a 9-horsepower (6.7-kilowatt) Briggs & Stratton engine and skis made of Chevrolet bumpers. The first commercial model, the Sno-Traveler, had a rear traction platform and a front section composed of a boat hull with skis. The Sno-Traveler did well, and the U.S. Air Force even used it to get within 400 miles of the North Pole.

Over the years, Polaris expanded its product portfolio through product development and the acquisitions of manufacturers including Indian Motorcycle, Slingshot, Aixam, and Goupil. Today, the Polaris lineup features vehicles for all types of weather and terrain, with a portfolio covering snowmobiles, snow bikes, motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, passenger vehicles, boats, and military vehicles.

    Popular Polaris Equipment

After decades of producing farm equipment and snowmobiles, the company entered the ATV market in 1985 with the three-wheeled Scrambler and the four-wheeled Trail Boss. Today, Polaris manufactures dozens of all-terrain vehicles, including its most popular model, the Polaris Ranger UTV. The Polaris Ranger 570 is versatile and affordable, while the Polaris Ranger XP 1000 delivers unparalleled power and performance.

The high-performing Polaris RZR side-by-side lineup includes the RZR 1000, built with an advanced suspension for speed and maneuverability. The Polaris Sportsman 570 ATV offers exceptional handling, power, and comfort, even when navigating rough terrains.
