    About Loaders

Loaders are also commonly referred to as “front-end loaders,” or “FELs,” and can be fitted with various attachments to extended their functionality, such as buckets, bale forks, and grapples. Tractors equipped with loaders can conveniently transport such materials as feed, fertilizer, hay, manure, poultry litter, silage, and straw. Loaders and their various attachments also come in handy on construction, forestry, paving, and other jobsites for hauling soil, removing branches and trees, spreading rock and gravel, and cleaning up debris.

    Compatibility

Loaders are available for a wide range of tractor sizes, including everything from compact tractors in the neighborhood of 20 to 65 horsepower (15 to 48.5 kilowatts) on through larger tractors that top 275 HP (205 kW). John Deere’s loader lineup, for instance, spans compact utility tractors in the 23- to 66-HP (17- to 49-kW) range with a roughly 71.2-inch (180.8-centimeter) reach height and 570-pound (260-kilogram) lifting capacity to models for row crop tractors falling in the 145- to 345-HP (108- to 257-kW) range with 188-in. (477-cm) lift heights and up to 5,700-lb (2,585-kg) lifting capacities.

    Specialty Loader Manufacturers

There are a number of third-party manufacturers such as Koyker and Westendorf that make loaders for other brands’ tractors; these are generally designed for broad compatibility with as many tractor makes and models as possible. Westendorf, for example, says its attachments and loader lines are compatible with nearly 18,000 tractor makes and models. Some loader makers even offer custom paint jobs to match their equipment to a particular tractor brand.

    Common Features

Like most modern farm equipment, loaders are available with high-tech features such as self-leveling and quick-connect systems, as well as practical accessories like parking stands that simplify their overall operation and storage. Many current loaders provide toolless attachment and removal; John Deere’s 700M loader, for example, features a single-point-hydraulic push-handle connection that situates all hydraulic and electronic connections into one location.
