In 1923, two brothers created the first self-propelled combine harvester, giving it the name Gleaner and starting what has become a leader in transverse rotary combines. Unlike other combines, the Gleaner combines were unpainted and instead used galvanized sheet metal for the exterior, providing a distinct silver-gray color.

Allis-Chalmers acquired Gleaner in 1955, and then sold the farm machinery portion of the business to Deutz AG in 1985, forming Deutz-Allis, which later became AGCO. In addition to the unique exterior, Gleaner combines offered several industry firsts, including being the first to replace the canvas drapers with an auger and introduce electro-hydraulic controls. As a brand of AGCO, Gleaner still offers S9 Super Series and S8 Super Series combines for sale, along with draper headers and various flex, pickup, and corn heads. The Gleaner combines can use AGCO’s FUSE precision agriculture technology for guidance, yield monitoring, and other tasks.
