    About Pull-Type Forage Harvesters

Forage harvesters, also known as “silage harvesters,” “foragers,” or “choppers,” use a cutterhead with knives attached to harvest crops for silage. The first forage harvester, created in the 1890s, used a sickle attached to a cylindrical curved-bar cutterhead. Modern-day forage harvesters fall into one of two main sub-types: pull-type and self-propelled harvesters.

    Characteristics

Pull-type forage harvesters are implements that attach to tractors to cut forage, as opposed to self-propelled models, which combine a diesel engine, a transmission, and forage harvesting equipment into a single machine. Pull-type harvesters are often used on operations that don’t grow enough forage crops to warrant a dedicated harvester. Many newer models come with built-in knife sharpeners to ensure even cutting and many include a crop processor as either standard or optional and can cut to various lengths according to the number of knives in use. Harvesters also typically have an attached blower that moves processed forage into wagons or trucks for transport.
