    About 40- To 99-Horsepower Tractors

Designed for hobby, farm-to-table, and small and midsized farm operations, these tractors are available with and without cabs and combine the operator comfort, ease of use, and maneuverability of smaller-sized tractors with the engine and PTO power and expanded abilities of larger utility models. This makes 40- to 99-horsepower tractors suitable for heavier loader and backhoe work along with a wide range of small-scale farming, haying, and livestock applications, plus roadside mowing and brush clearing, landscaping, forestry, trenching, material hauling, snow plowing, road grading, and other tasks that smaller lawn and garden and compact tractors typically lack the power and implement or attachment support to tackle.

    Small & Midsize Tractor Features

Tractors in this size range typically offer features including Tier 4-compliant engines, power shuttle and hydrostatic transmissions, climate-controlled cabs with foldable ROPS (rollover protection structures), adjustable steering wheels, cruise control, four-wheel drive, mid-mounted PTO, heavy-duty 3-point hitches, suspension seating, ergonomically designed operator stations, multiple wheel options, and easily accessible maintenance points.

    Case IH Compact Farmall 55C

Case IH Farmall Compact C CVT series models, for example, feature a continuously variable transmission that requires no shifting and simplifies operation via an intuitive control pod. Massey Ferguson, meanwhile, designs its 2700E Series models for rural-lifestyle customers by making implement changes quick and easy and service points easy to reach and enter, while still providing a 2,425-pound (1,100-kilogram) loader lift capacity.

New Holland’s Workmaster Utility 55-75 Series includes a loader joystick with a choice of traditional or more modern ergonomic control. The company’s Boom 35-55 HP Series supports dozens of attachments and accessories for mowing, tilling, stall cleaning, bale moving, and other jobs.

    Other Tractor Classifications

While classifications differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, common tractor categories include lawn and garden, subcompact, compact, utility, farm, and row crop. Tractors on TractorHouse.com are organized into four horsepower classes besides 40- to 99-hp:

Less than 40 horsepower. Designed for acreages, small farms, and big gardens, these tractors include lawn and garden, subcompact, and smaller-frame compact models used for mowing, hauling, light grading, tilling, and basic garden or farm work.

100 to 174 horsepower. Tractors in this class are sometimes called “farm tractors” for all the jobs they can handle around midsized and large ag operations. Models from Case IH’s Puma, Maxxum, and Vestrum series designed for livestock, dairy, mixed-crop, field, and loader work are examples.

175 to 299 horsepower. Offering multiple transmission options, precision farming technologies, larger fuels tanks, fuel-efficient engines, wider tires, multi-control armrests, and ultra-comfortable enclosed cabs, these tractors can handle nearly any job or implement.

300 or greater horsepower. Also known as “row crop tractors,” these tractors are the most expensive and most powerful, feature-packed, and versatile of all. With models like the 692-hp Case IH Steiger Quadtrac and 682-hp New Holland T9.700 at the high end, these tractors are designed for large-scale commercial farm, hay, dairy, livestock, and similar operations.

You’ll also find a huge selection of orchard and vineyard tractor listings on SpecialtyCropEQ.com. Orchard and vineyard tractors are typically extra-narrow models with other optimizations such as low centers of gravity for stable operation on slopes and operator protection from branches and vines.
